英文法は役に立たないのだろうか
Is English Grammar useless?
日本人が英語ができないのは学校英語で文法を無理やり覚えさせられたせいだ、とよく言われましたが、そのためか、高校での体系的な文法授業がなくなりました。コミュニケーション重視なので、慣れて覚えた方がいいというわけです。しかし、そのせいか、高校生レベルの英語力が低下しています。つまり、結局、単語をどう結びつけて良いか分からないために、正しい英語が作れないのです。よく赤ん坊は、習わなくても言語を話すようになるではないかと言われます。が、実は慣れて覚えるというのは、本当は、とても大変です。赤ん坊もお母さんのお腹の中にいる時から24時間体制でお母さ
んの言葉をずっと聞いていて、その上、生まれた後も言葉に慣れ、カタコト話せるようになるのに更に2年以上かかっているのです。日本の学生さんは、英語を話す国に生まれ変わるわけにもいかず、英語を学校で習うのは一週間に数時間に過ぎないので、この慣れて覚えるという自然法は全く無茶な話です。しつこく例え話をすると、初めての大きな街に行って、地図もナビもなしで全体の地理を把握しようとするようなものです。ただ、学問的文法知識を網羅的に納めている分厚い辞書のような文法書を覚える必要はありません。英語を使うために必要な文法をしっかり学び、英語を使えるように練習することが重要です。つまりこの時点では、慣れる練習をする必要があります。英語を使うために必要な実戦的文法とは何？という話はまた次回にしましょう！

It was often said that Japanese people couldn’t use English properly because they were forced to learn English grammar at school. Probably because of this, they don’t have classes that teach grammar systematically in high school anymore.
They say now that communication is more emphasized, it is better to learn how to use it by getting used to it. Due to this, the English level of high school students has declined. In other words, they don’t know how to connect words in order to compose proper English.
It is often pointed out that babies can learn their mother tongue without being taught, but actually learning language by getting used to it is a herculean task and babies start to listen to what their mother says around the clock even when
they are still in their mother’s womb. Besides, they take more than two years to learn how to speak even in baby words.
Since Japanese students can’t be reborn in English speaking countries, of course, and they learn English for only a couple hours a week at school, it is outrageous to expect them to master English by just getting used to it.
If you let me compare this to something else, it is just like visiting a big town for the first time without a map or navigation system but still try to grasp its whole geography.
You don’t have to remember what those fat grammar books like dictionaries, with rather comprehensive academic grammatical knowledge say. You should learn practical grammar fully to use English and practice using English according to it. Here you need to get used to the grammar.
