Exercise 7 script
Jazz was born in the city of New Orleans. No one knows just how it began. But it must have started just after the Civil War, in the 1860’s or 70’s. And those who created it had once been slaves.
The slaves had always made music. Their instruments were simple. They had to make them by themselves. They learned how to make violins and banjos from boxes and other simple materials.
But that was before the War. Now they were free. Now they were earning money. Now they could buy real instruments. They bought trumpets, clarinets, drums, and flutes.
There was no one to teach them how to play their new instruments, so they taught themselves. As they learned to play, they made up their own songs.
It was a music full of life, yet it was often played at a time of death. In the early days it was at funerals that bands really showed what they could do. The players would march to the cemetery playing music that was slow and sad. But on the way home it was a different story. The band would let go and the HOT music would dance in the air.
Jazz was the first truly American music. It was the music of free men, telling the story of freedom. Today it tells that story to people all over the world.

ジャズは、初めての真のアメリカ音楽であった。それは、自由の物語を語る、自由な人間の音楽であった。今日、それは世界中の人々にその物語を伝えている。
